Soldier caught mailing rifles home from Afghanistan

A 28-year-old Canadian Forces sergeant has been fined $1,500 for mailing home assault rifles from Afghanistan as war souvenirs.

Sgt. Randy Olive was near the end of his second tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2010 when he shipped three AK-74 military assault rifles and four 30-round magazines of ammunition to his home in Sault Ste. Marie.

The Canada Border Services Agency in Trenton had spotted the second package, with two rifles and three ammunition magazines, when it arrived via Canada Post on Sept. 17, 2010. Military police found an earlier parcel, with one rifle and one magazine of ammunition, when they searched Olive’s home.

Olive, an eight-year veteran of the Forces, was arrested aboard a Chinook helicopter headed back to Kandahar, Afghanistan, from a forward operating base on Oct. 17, 2010……………………………..”

„Same with one of my Uncles. When he got into San Francisco, someone got on a loudspeaker and said they were going to search everyone for weapons as they were leaving the ship. Alot of cussing and splashes soon followed. Nobody searched them, it was a bluff, leading to much more cussing. Probably alot of good WW2 collectables on the bottom of many US ports. „
